Name Parts of Your Day

Naming parts of your day can provide a mental anchor and help to establish a specific intention to boost productivity or enjoyment.

We all set aside specific times to engage in a particular activity, but by committing to the same time every day and then naming it, the activity becomes more purposeful and focused. This sense of control over time promotes the resilience necessary for creating powerful habits.

Naming parts of your day also has social benefits. When parts of your day have a unique name or description, it communicates loudly your priorities to others, encouraging them to respect your dedicated blocks of time.

The idea of naming parts of the day is common for everyone. We already think in blocks of time with names: bedtime, happy hour, lunchtime, twilight, sunrise, dusk, coffee time, and late afternoon are some well-worn examples.

Consider creating a distinct time and name for your most important activities and priorities. This will make it easier for you to do them each day and maintain the discipline of not allowing other priorities to encroach upon them.

Here are some popular examples of names: Composing time, screen-free time, story time, learning lab, cardio time, study hour, wind down time, reflection time, creative corner, power walking time, early-bird writing time, cooking siesta time, family focus time, inbox time, mid-morning catchup time, just-before-bed reading time.

The unique names you might give a specific activity and time block should be a reflection of your commitment to and focus on a particular activity at a set time. Just one or two parts of your day with a distinctive name will work wonders in concentrating your efforts and setting your priorities.

Names are the poetry of commitment when it comes to being the most productive you can be. Sometimes, all it takes is a name to give new meaning to a common moment.
